(From a luxury travel advisor who has done this trip twice, once for romance and once with the kids.)

The first time I visited Costa Rica, it was just my husband and me. We were celebrating our 10-year wedding anniversary. We flew into San José, drove up to Arenal, and flew back out. Honestly, the whole thing felt like one big adventure. Years later, I went back with a very different crew: my kids. This time, we drove both ways. It felt safer, and it gave me more control with the children in tow. And of course, I fell in love with the country all over again through their eyes.
So Costa Rica is, hands down, one of my favorite places to send families. If you’re dreaming about Costa Rica with kids, this is my ultimate luxury adventure itinerary. Below, you’ll find where to go, where to stay, and what to do. Best of all, I’ll show you how I structure it so your family gets the magic without the chaos.
Why Costa Rica Is Made for Family Adventure
Costa Rica is that rare place that delights every age at once. So here’s why it works so well for families:
- 🦥 Wildlife everywhere. Sloths, monkeys, and toucans turn every walk into a nature documentary. And because the land and the sloths are truly protected, you feel good about every encounter.
- 🌋 Adventure for every comfort level. For example, you can pick a gentle waterfall hike or full-throttle rafting. In other words, you dial the thrill up or down for each person.
- 🥑 Incredible farm-to-table food. It’s fresh, local, and delicious. Even picky eaters find their favorites.
- 🌱 Safe, stable, and welcoming. In fact, it’s one of the easiest countries in Latin America to visit with children. That famous “pura vida” warmth is everywhere.
- 🏝️ Rainforest and beach in one trip. So you never have to choose.

How I Structure a Costa Rica Trip With Kids
For first-timers, I almost always design the trip the same way. First, you start with adventure. Then, you end with the beach. You spend the early days in the rainforest, chasing waterfalls and wildlife. After that, you land on the coast to slow down and soak up the sun. So it’s the perfect arc.
Here’s one practical tip from experience. On my anniversary trip, we flew one way and drove the other. That was a fun adventure for two adults. But with my kids, I chose to drive both ways. Because it felt safer, it gave me more control over the pace and the snack breaks. So that’s exactly the kind of call I help families make.
First: Arenal (Volcano, Rainforest, and Hot Springs)
Arenal is the adventure heart of Costa Rica. In fact, it’s so special that I’ve now been twice. For where to stay, Nayara is truly one of a kind. It’s luxurious and tucked into the rainforest, with resident sloths in the trees. Also, it has natural hot springs right on site. Then, both times, we made a point of visiting Tabacón. Its thermal hot springs are pure magic. Picture warm mineral rivers winding through the jungle. Of course, the kids adored them just as much as we did.
Then: The Coast (Beach and Barefoot Luxury)
After the adventure, we headed to the Pacific coast. We stayed at the W Costa Rica at Reserva Conchal. It’s a five-star resort right on the white sands of Playa Conchal, in Guanacaste. Best of all, it has a private beach, and it is absolutely amazing. In short, it’s the kind of place where the kids stay happy and the grown-ups finally relax.
Our Favorite Things to Do in Costa Rica With Kids
So what should you actually do? Here are our family favorites:
- White-water rafting was our number-one adventure, hands down. Because there are options for different ages, it’s more accessible than parents expect.
- Ziplining came in a very close second. In fact, soaring through the canopy is a core memory in the making.
- A private cooking class in a local home. Honestly, this was such an unexpected highlight. It’s hands-on, delicious, and a lovely window into the culture.
- Waterfall hikes. There are two lovely ones near Arenal. My tip: choose the one you can swim in. After the hike, you get to cool off in the pool at the bottom.
- Wildlife spotting and hot springs. Together, they round out the perfect Arenal days.

WWhen to Visit Costa Rica With Kids
The dry season runs roughly mid-December through April. It’s the classic sweet spot, with sunny days and easy logistics. As a result, it lines up nicely with winter and spring breaks. The greener, quieter season runs about June 1 through October 1. It’s lush and often more affordable. Also, the rain usually comes in short bursts, not all-day washouts. So both seasons can be wonderful. In the end, it comes down to your timing and your goals.
Getting There
You have two main gateways. First, San José (SJO) works well for an Arenal-first route. Second, Liberia (LIR) sits closer to the Guanacaste beaches. Either way, I map your flights and transfers for you. So your route flows smoothly, and you don’t lose vacation days to surprises.
The Secret to a Seamless Costa Rica Trip
Here’s the honest truth: Costa Rica rewards good planning. For example, you want the right resort for your kids’ ages. You also want transfers timed so no one melts down. And you want guides who are wonderful with children. Together, these details turn a good trip into an unforgettable one.
So that’s exactly where I come in. As a Virtuoso travel advisor, I can add perks like room upgrades, resort credits, and daily breakfast at properties like the W. Meanwhile, I handle every moving part, so you just show up and soak it in. And if you loved my multigenerational trip guide, know this: Costa Rica is one of my favorite places to make that family magic happen.
